The action of hot and cold water chlorination is very important for the safety of the world's population.

Hot and cold water Chlorination is the process of adding the element, chlorine, to water in order for the water to be pure and drinkable. Treating water with chlorine is effective in preventing the spread of water borne disease.

The idea of hot and cold water chlorination to public drinking supplies was originally met with resistance, as people were concerned about the health effects of the use of the element chlorine. The use of hot and cold water chlorination has greatly reduced the prevalence of waterborne disease as it is effective against almost all bacteria, parasite, viruses, as well as protozoa infections.

Hot and cold water chlorination is a process used in many swimming pools, water wells, springs, and other water sources to reduce the bacterial and algal residue in the water.
An additional formation of hot and cold water chlorination is shock chlorination and is performed by mixing a large amount of sodium hypochlorite, which can be in the form of a powder or a liquid such as ...
... chlorine bleach, into the water. Water that is shock chlorinated cannot be utilized until the sodium hypochlorite count in the water goes down to three parts per million or less.

Over large parts of the world, humans have inadequate access to potable water and use water supplies that are contaminated with disease vectors, pathogens or unacceptable levels of toxins or suspended solids. This diseased water is not wholesome, and drinking or using such water in food preparation leads to widespread acute and chronic illnesses and is a major cause of death in many countries. Hot and cold water chlorination of waterborne diseases is a major public health goal in developing countries.

The list below is just a small portion of all the waterborne illnesses that can occur without hot and cold water chlorination services.
