Supported living covers a variety of services which have been built to help those with disabilities to live separately.

Supported living eradicates the need for individuals who need some extra help to live full time in a care home, meaning they are able to live their lives according to their own desires. It facilitates people to select their own routines, enjoy additional responsibility and reside close to friends and relations.

The services which can be referred to as ‘supported living’ differ substantially.

Supporting somebody to obtain a property of their very own, whether or not they resided previously in a care home environment or with friends or family is known as ‘supported living’.

Day-to-day visits to help a person cook, wash, dress or do other general household duties is ‘supported living’.

Helping somebody to fill in forms or handle everyday tasks like paying the bills or manage money is ‘supported living’.

This sort of support does not just comprise of assistance in the home. You may help somebody visit the ...
... supermarket, or even set up days out to an amusement park or something similar.

Even helping someone to apply for College or a job could be thought of as supported living.

The flexibility supported living delivers is one of its primary benefits. You cannot homogenise the requirements of disabled people, but this is the type of care that care homes provide. The environment is typically restrictive and claustrophobic.

Though this isn't to suggest that care home's do not fit particular people, it is just that many are much happier living independently and receiving help as and when they require it.

Supported living may be adapted depending on the person’s abilities, needs, thoughts and priorities. As the requirements of the individual alters, so can the support.

Usually, and depending on the complexness of the individual's requirements, the client will be assigned a carer or carers.

What is important is that the client will continuously be visited by the very same carer or carers. This guarantees the carer is able to get to know the personality and preferences of their client, therefore enhancing the standard of care they're able to provide.

Though professional barriers must always remain in place, a relationship will probably be built, supplying a regularity and familiarity which will significantly advantage the client; especially in the case of brain injury rehabilitation or people with mental health problems or learning disabilities.

In actual fact, supported living may help individuals with a vast range of requirements, from learning disabilities, autism and mental health needs through to physical disabilities and those dealing with brain injury rehabilitation.

In addition, the help provided doesn't need to only benefit the client themself. Supported living services can work alongside friends and relations to supply additional assistance or provide a little ‘free-time’ for those who work full-time tending to a loved one.
