What is a CPAP machine?

Basically, a CPAP machine is simply a piece of equipment about the size of an alarm clock that delivers pressurized air through a tube to a mask that is worn over the nose or face. The central focus of the CPAP machine is to prevent apnea events from occurring, allowing the user to sleep continuously without breaks in breathing patterns. A CPAP machine prevents apneas by delivering enough pressurized air into the throat to keep it from closing during the sleep cycle.

The way in which a CPAP machine delivers pressurized air varies between types of machines. It could be a constant rate (standard machine) delivered at a prescribed pressure or a variable rate (automatic machine) which automatically adjusts its pressure on a breath by breath basis. Automatic machines have become much more popular as they deliver the optimal amount of pressure as patient pressure needs change throughout the nightly sleep cycle.

One common mistake for new sleep therapy patients is inconsistent use of a CPAP machine. In order to alleviate sleep apnea symptoms, ...
... it is imperative that the patient remain compliant. If there is non-compliance, symptoms and lack of sleep return immediately. Understanding how a CPAP machine should be used and what the expected outcome will be helps patients remain compliant. However, if the treatment is not meeting personal needs, it’s necessary to determine the underlying issue and correct it. If a CPAP machine is not being used regularly because it is uncomfortable, ask the care provider for assistance or different machine or mask options. The key is to remain committed to the success of the treatment.

To summarize, CPAP machines are the most common and successful treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. Although many patients may find that using a CPAP machine requires changes to bedtime routines and can initially be less than optimal, sleep therapy improves the quality of life through more and better sleep. So, if you ever hear the question, “What is a CPAP machine”, pass on the information, it could save a friends life.

Chris Vasta operates TheCPAPShop.com, a leading retailer of CPAP mask, located in New Jersey. He understands the importance of education about CPAP machines so that sleep apnea sufferers will continue to use their machines.
