A bacterial or fungal infection of the outer ear canal is referred to as swimmers ear. This kind of an infection usually occurs because of prolonged water exposure which causes the protective waxy lining of the ear canal to get washed away. Furthermore, the water which remains inside the ear even after you finish a swim provides an ideal breeding environment for bacteria and fungus. Infections like swimmers ear not only affect regular swimmers but can even occur after water enters the ear canal during a shower. Infections can also enter the ear through foreign substances inserted in the ear such as ear buds, cotton swabs and even fingernails. The best swimmers ear home remedy is therefore to try and prevent such infections by taking certain precautions. First of all it is important to avoid swimming in any kind of dirty water which is the most susceptible place to catch a bacterial infection. Secondly once you have finished a swim or a shower it is important to get rid of the excess water stuck inside the ear. This can be done by shaking your head to dislodge the water. If you suffer from swimmers ear there are a number of home remedies which can help you treat and cure this infection. These remedies can be used alongside conventional treatment methods and pose no serious side effects. One the best swimmers ear home remedy is garlic. Garlic oil can be used as ear drops while suffering from this infection and after leaving it in the ear canal for a short while it can be drained out by tilting your head. Garlic oil not only helps in soothing the irritation and itching caused by swimmers ear but it also helps in killing the bacteria causing this ear infection. Garlic consumption in the daily diet can also be increased to treat this problem internally. Equally quantities of white vinegar and rubbing alcohol can be mixed in a bottle and 2 drops of this mixture can be put into the affected ear to treat the infection. The vinegar helps in restoring the ph balance in the ear while the alcohol helps in drying the excess water inside the ear. This treatment can also be used as a preventive measure after swimming.

Castor oil and olive oil can be used as effective home remedies for swimmers ear. These oils can be warmed a little and a few drops can be inserted into the affected ear and then drained out after a while. Similarly calendula oil can also be applied in and around the ear to get relief from the pain and itching caused by swimmers ear. It is very effective in killing the infection causing bacteria and can provide quick relief from this problem. Herbs like Echinacea and witch hazel are widely used for several problems including swimmers ear. Echinacea can be consumed in the prescribed quantities to build immunity and fight bacterial infections. Tea prepared from witch hazel can be applied in the infected ear with the help of a cotton swab. Witch hazel contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties which help in alleviating the pain and itching caused by this ear infection. Another good home remedy for swimmers ear is cornmeal which can be filled in a sock and heated in a microwave for at least 30 seconds and then placed on the aching ear to provide effective relief.
