There are some important things you need to do if you were to protect yourself from getting scammed from moving companies. As we all know, the moving industry in the United States was deregulated in the 90’s and has been in the state of shamble ever since then. As scam companies are filling up the moving requirements in the US, the genuine lots are finding it extremely difficult to compete with them. And considering the fact that more than 40 million Americans move each year, the genuine companies are missing out on a trick or two to stay afloat in this business. By taking adequate steps you can not only protect yourself but also your family members and all your belongings.

1] One of the first things you need to look into while hiring movers is that they have to have a valid license and an approval from FMCSA. Mind you, in dealing with a licensed mover you are eligible to responsibilities and certain rights. You need to ask for a Federal Brochure while you are hiring a mover. You need to ascertain that you’re working with a moving company and not with the moving brokers.

2] There are various places from where ...
... you can get a lot of details of moving companies that you would wish to hire. Some of these avenues include tallow pages, newspapers and the word of mouth. Contact your friends, colleagues or relatives that have had experience in hiring these providers. Get to know their experiences. If you contact a company directly do make it sure to get at least 3 references from them. If there are willing to provide the same then you can be sure they are indeed serious in their business and that they are genuine providers. Else, you can expect their services to be below par.

3] If it is possible, make an attempt to move yourself without any outside assistance. In fact, most of the moving companies that provide this option to their customers have gone on to become the industry leaders these days. If you’re moving over a short distance then you can consider using pods as they are easy to load and store. Furthermore, they can be carried along easy and are less expensive. But for longer distances you may have to consider using moving trucks and drivers. As packing all your materials will add to your existing costs, make use you do it yourself. Scam companies might end up damaging your items and blaming you for it.

4] It can be dangerous to load and unload things on your own. However, packing things can be done by you. In case you need the service of moving companies to do this job for you, make sure they have the necessary supplies and materials. There are certain companies that are known to use cheaper and shorter rolls. They might even provide you with smaller boxes and make an attempt to pack off your things into it and end up damaging few of them. In fact, few of these movers may not be adequately trained to move electrical equipment, heavy furniture. Hence, allowing these companies to get this job done for you might be costly for you. It is better you do these jobs yourself.

5] Once the mover has delivered the goods at your door steps, make sure you check it immediately for any damages. Though as per the rule, consumers have 90 days to file a complaint in case of damages done to your goods, you shouldn’t let go the situation to go that far. It is better you take a video of all your contents before packing takes place in the first place. This will serve as an evidence should you need it later. In case of missing or damaged items, the matter has to be reported to the cops right away. In such cases, you can even register a formal complaint with the moving companies. If they fail to act upon your complaint then take up the matter with the FMCSA.

The above mentioned things are not the only details you need to look into in order to prevent getting scammed from moving companies. You will still need to use your judgment and sense while taking a decision in these regards.
