Bad breath or halitosis affects many people and can become quite offensive for other people. The people who suffer from bad breath are most times unaware of this problem. In most cases people suffer from bad breath due to poor oral hygiene or bad teeth. Plaque is a film of bacteria that are invisible and coat the teeth and tongue which is another reason for bad breath. Dental decay and minor holes in the teeth harbour germs which multiply and lead to foul smelling mouth. In old people if the dentures do not fit properly or are not cleaned properly can lead to bad breath. Bad breath is caused by anaerobic bacteria that are present in the mouth that produce sulphur compounds.

There are many reasons apart from bad teeth and oral hygiene that can cause bad breath. Inflammation of the stomach and undigested food can also lead to bad breath. Infection of adenoids, tonsils and sinuses is another cause. Alcohol, tobacco, alcohol mouthwash, garlic, onions, dry mouth and spicy food are yet more reasons for bad breath.

There are many ways in which you can cure bad breath. The simplest of them is to keep the mouth as clean ...
... as possible. This means brushing teeth twice a day and also flossing everyday which will help to slow down build up of plaque and ensures fresh breath. Keeping the tongue clean is also important which means cleaning the tongue regularly so as to stop build up of bacteria on it. People should make it a habit to clean their tongue each time they brush their teeth.

People should rinse their mouth with water every time they have something to eat or drink. Rinsing with water after every meal will ensure that no food particles remain lodged in the teeth. By swirling water in the mouth the food particles will get removed giving the person fresh breath. People who have dry mouth also have bad breath so it becomes important to keep mouth wet with saliva as saliva helps to wash out food particles and clean teeth in the process. Morning breath is cause mainly due to low saliva levels in the mouth. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is another way to stop bad breath. Eating figs or chewing on parsley also helps in refreshing breath and in reducing bad breath.

Many types of food like onion, garlic, pastrami, anchovies, pepperoni, salami and different types of cheeses should be avoided to avoid bad breath. Drinks like, wine, coffee, whisky and beer also cause plaque so it makes sense to avoid them to cure bad breath.
