Ultrasound Technician Schools Teaches More Than Just Testing Of New Mothers
Ultrasound technician schools prepare new students for the tasks they will complete in their new field of work. An ultrasound is a piece of equipment utilizing waves to sound to look inside the human body and display the findings on a screen. Most people think that an ultrasound is reserved for examining women who are expecting a baby. However, the abilities of the equipment reach much further than that.
Simplicity of the Procedure
One of the nice things about an ultrasound procedure is the fact that is not invasive. People can schedule an appointment for an ultrasound and have it completed in a matter of minutes with no after affects. There are some special procedures involving a probe that can be inserted into the body, but these are not the only forms of the testing.
Varying Ways to use Ultrasound
Ultrasound technical schools will teach its students ways to use an ultrasound scan beyond the examination for expectant mothers. Here are some of the most common uses
Pelvic scan – This is an exam done for women that are experiencing ...
... pain in the pelvic area. In addition to pain, women that have cysts, menstrual cycles that are irregular and fibroids.
Abdominal examination – Similar to the pelvic examination, the ultrasound can be used to inspect a person’s abdomen. This can help determine problems with vomiting, pain in the abdomen, nausea, unusually lumps or sounds. Some of the organs that can be examined are the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, bile ducts, kidneys, large blood vessels and the spleen. Organs like the bowels and stomach are difficult to examine with ultrasound because these organs have air within them. The air interferes with the sound waves.
Pregnancy exam – Most ultrasound technical schools do a thorough job of preparing new techs for pregnancy exam work since this is the most common use of ultrasound technology. The pregnancy exam can inspect the position as well as age of the fetus, detect some abnormalities that may be present, and growth in the fetus during development.
Other common ways to use Ultrasound – Breast examinations (used to investigate a lump or other abnormality that was discovered during a mammogram or physical inspection), musculoskeletal exam (to examine hip, elbow or shoulder) and exam of an eye (to inspect the structures found on the inside of the eyeball). There is even a more specialized test called the Doppler that can determine direction and speed of blood as it travels through particular sections of the body.
Ultrasound technical schools are a wonderful way for someone to get introduced into the field of medicine. Most schools offer a two year program that allows students to graduate and begin looking for work as a technician. Some people continue on with their career as technicians while other people use their degree as a stepping stone on to other endeavors such as an administrator of a facility or even as a doctor. Other students choose to opt for EKG tech training to increase their skills and make them more valuable to a hospital or testing facility.
