There are so many options today for a department or law enforcement agency to choose from for their police gear that for many departments the procurement process and research involved may require a team of people to gather information as well as gather input from active officers in the field. In addition, the categories of police gear is very wide which include duty gear, body armor, police knives, police handcuffs, police gear bags, motor officer gear, optics, eye and ear protection, firearms, clothing and protective clothing, police footwear, car accessories, flashlights, tactical gear, among others as well. Having knowledge of each of these categories can be a full time undertaking. Therefore, it is better to make relationships with both manufacturers representatives and dealers to help in this process.

Nationwide there are over 600 active uniform and equipment companies which can provide assistance in choosing or procuring your police gear. Some of the largest companies include Galls based out of Kentucky and Quartermaster based out of California. But in many cases dealing with big companies can prove to be difficult ...
... in getting someone with enough knowledge to assist you. Several smaller companies are available to help in the process and in many cases you will deal with the owner directly or a manager. One example would be Police Equipment Depot or INTAPOL Industries both based out of New Jersey. Besides being stocking distributors of several well known brands such as Smith & Wesson, GH Armor Systems, Armor Express, Benchmade knives, Uncle Mike's, Peerless, Under Armour, Blackhawk and 5.11 Tactical, these companies have the experience to offer advice and direction in addition to offering very cost effective pricing.

Getting feedback from officer's in the field is also critical to help guide a procurement department's decision making. In addition, colder areas may require different police gear than warmer climates located in the south and higher crime areas may require different needs than in lower crime areas. All of these little details help in the process and should be taken into consideration for every departments purchases especially with the reduced local, state and federal budgets in recent years. Having police gear that is not necessary for a given department is no longer an option.
