Diwali is celebrated all over India and even abroad in a traditional way. Different regions of India have their own ways of celebrating this grand festival. Jammu and Kashmir is a beautiful state, it is like heaven on earth and so is the charm of diwali festival. When these two beauties come together, the ambience can not be compared to any thing in this world. There are many religions all over India, yet all are united and that’s why India is the biggest democracy with diversities. All Indian, despite of their religion and caste celebrate this festival with great zeal and happiness. Similarly, in Jammu and Kashmir, this festival is celebrated in a traditional way. Diwali is one of the oldest rituals among the Kashmiri Pandits. It is even mentioned in the Nilmat Puran and was celebrated as Sukhsuptika, then. This celebration used to start from Ekadashi through to no moon night or Amavasya. On Amavasya or diwali, theres a tradition of fasting among the elders of the family. Later in the evening they worship Goddess Laxmi with the entire family, relatives and friends.

... in every nook and corner of the home as well as other places like temples, bank of river, road crossings, lakes and streams, cremation ground, hill houses, shops, courtyards, cow sheds, under the trees, etc. Alike other parts of India, people in Jammu and Kashmir, wear new clothes on diwali and enjoy music, etc. Every state of India has its own peculiar traditional ways of celebrating any festival, however, the significance and the charm remains the same. Every body exchanges gifts on diwali after the pooja. People decorate every corner and bend of their homes with stone lamps, electric lamps, vegetation and other decorative items. People dress in new clothes on diwali and buy house hold goods, trinkets, new homes, shops, offices, etc. as it is considered very auspicious to do so, on diwali.

Diwali is believed to be very lucky also because it is also the beginning of the Hindu New Year for most of the people. Diwali is celebrated with different customs and traditions all over India, however, the charm and significance of the festival is still the same. One of the most important traditions is giving diwali gifts to the family member, relatives, friends, neighbors, etc. In Indian culture, giving anything on festivals and otherwise also, is considered good. It is believed that the donator or the giver is blessed by the God and gets double or even more in return. Well what ever the reason is, it is a good tradition, as the needy people also get a lot of benefit on this great festival. Every unbending celebrates this joyful festival, be it poor or rich, hence it can be truly called a event of happiness and light and the celebration for prosperity.
