It is known that grape seed extract is one of the best antioxidants. As a matter of fact, it is also rich in polyphenols; a compound appears to reduce the plaque formation in the brain which is associated with the cognitive impairment in Alzheimer’s disease.

Grape seed extract may help delay the development of Alzheimer's disease, according to an animal study published in 2009. In tests on mice, scientists discovered that grape seed extract eased inflammation and prevented the accumulation of substances known to form the brain plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease.

According to a study conducted by researchers from the Alzheimer's Association, grape seed extract can prevent the buildup of brain plaques that are associated with cell death and the development of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a slowly progressive disease of the brain that is characterized by impairment of memory and eventually by disturbances in reasoning, planning, language, and perception. Many scientists believe that Alzheimer's disease results from an increase in the production or accumulation of a specific protein ...
... (beta-amyloid protein) in the brain that leads to nerve cell death.

Grape seed extract is showing potential as a way to prevent Alzheimer's disease and other age-related memory loss. A study by researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, in New York City, found that the extract prevented the build-up of amyloid plaques, large protein molecules that interfere with brain function. That’s because Polyphenols extracted from grape seeds extract are able to inhibit amyloid-beta (Abeta) aggregation, reduce Abeta production and protect against Abeta neurotoxicity in vitro.

Amyloid beta plays a central role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease because the accumulation of amyloid beta plaques in the brain is one of the hallmarks of the disease. Recently however, attention has focused on free-floating amlyoid beta oligomers which are smaller, soluble bundles of amyloid beta protein, as some studies have suggested that these may be the primary cause of cognitive impairment in Alzheimer’s disease rather than the plaques themselves.

In addition, the polyphenols in grape seed extract may contribute in many ways to brain health. They help preserve blood circulation, reduce inflammation, and act as potent antioxidants and detoxifiers. Plus, they inhibit some enzymes that break down proteins and destroy skin and blood vessels.

Apart from taking grape seed extract, you can also try some other effective ways to slow or prevent Alzheimer’s disease: eat fish at least twice a week or take a fish or flax oil supplement; add the spice turmeric to your diet; exercise your brain by doing activities such as playing card games, doing crossword puzzles, and reading books; avoid head injuries; keep the heart healthy.
