Jatav community forms a big population in Uttar Pradesh. Jatavs reside in various parts of India, such as western region of U.P., eastern parts of Rajasthan, north- western Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Nepal and Jammu and Kashmir, especially Jammu. Jatavs are considered as a progressive caste as compared to other scheduled castes in India. The entire community is very labourious and has an open mentality about the social aspects. However, when it comes to wedding, they are very typical about their wedding style, or inter caste marriages in Jatav Matrimonial. Such types of marriages are strictly prohibited in the Jatav community.

Earlier Jatavs had a lowers status in the society, and they were mainly involved in leather works such as tanning or preparing shoes. Nowadays, things have changed and parents are educating their children, leading to a better life. There are a number of Jatav youngsters who have been working for central government, because of the seats that are reserved for scheduled castes and tribes.

The weddings in Jatav community are very traditional, and the rituals followed depend on the region where the bride or groom’s families belong. The customs are performed according to the respective culture of the families of bride and groom.

The weddings in Jatav community are celebrated with full spirit. Jatav community is among those Indian communities, which performs the wedding rituals with purity and sacredness. The wedding rituals in Jatavs are also divided into three stages, which are pre-wedding rituals, wedding rituals and post-wedding rituals. The wedding rituals in Jatav matrimonial are:

Arrival of the groom

In the Jatav matrimonial, the groom arrives bride’s home with his relatives and friends. The Baarat or the wedding procession is welcomed and greeted by the bride’s family, with full enthusiasm. The groom is taken to the wedding mandap for wedding rituals; he is accompanied by his in laws, mainly his brother-in-law and mother-in-law.

Ganesh Pooja

Every function in the Hindus starts with the blessings of Lord Ganesha. The ceremony begins by offering pooja to Lord Ganesh.

Arrival of the Bride & Jaimala

In most of the cases, sisters and friends of the bride escort her to the mandap and the formalities of Jaimala (Exchanging of flower garlands) are accomplished in Jatav matrimonial. This custom signifies the acceptance of the bride and groom for each other.

Kanya Daan

Kanya Dann is the most significant ritual in the Jatav matrimonial, alike other Hindu weddings. Bride’s parents give away their daughter to the groom and his family.

Sindoordaan

The groom puts vermillion in the hair partition of his bride, and ties Mangalsutra around her neck. This makes bride and groom husband and wife for lifetime.

Phere

Also known as Mangal pheras, during which the bride and groom take the wedding vows in the Jatav matrimonial. They need to take seven circles around the sacred fire.

Vidaai

The most emotional time of a wedding ceremony is Vidaai, when the bride leaves her parents house and goes with her husband to start a new life.

Jatav matrimonial is no different from other Hindu matrimonies, where all communities aim towards imparting a happy and blissful married life to the bride and groom. The wedding is accomplished in the presence of elders of the family and god, alike other communities.
