You build your house with a great deal of attention to detail. After the design and construction elements have been accounted for, you move on to the task of putting the furniture in place. Furnishings both hard and soft provide winning touches to your interiors. But in your quest for the perfect materials and moods for the interiors, there is a chance of overlooking the elements of furniture that form part of the outdoors. But beware, this is the point of first contact for guests and visitors and they often form their first impressions based on what they see here. Even when you live in a condo, careful consideration must be provided to the outdoor elements of furniture in order to convey the right image. The role of such outdoor furniture, alternatively called site furniture, is more crucial in the case of public spaces like parks and walkways.

The first elements of site furniture are those which define the boundaries of your property. In addition to the demarcation function, they also give invaluable assistance in terms of defining pathways for pedestrians and traffic and earmarking areas within the property ...
... like swimming pool areas and play areas for children. Such furniture in the form of concrete bollards is invaluable in terms of functionality. Moreover, with a wide range of colours, finishes and shapes, concrete bollards make style statements of their own.

Let us consider the elements of site furniture which aid in the greening of spaces, especially in urban settings. Large outdoor planters are ideal receptacles to hold plants, both in the form of individual trees and collective groups like flower beds and cacti. Hanging planters are ideal for smaller spaces like a patio or a terrace garden. Smaller plant holders, shaped like tubs or urns are ideal to hold small trees and can be placed alongside walkways or close to seating areas in public spaces. Gazebos are alternative sites for the placement of plant holders, providing a green retreat from the afternoon sun. Tree guards and grates are also invaluable accessories in the planting and preservation of trees and shrubs among the mindless concrete jungles, we call urban landscapes.

But site furniture is not only about setting boundaries and greening up the place. They are also important in the maintenance of order, cleanliness and comfort. The outdoor bike racks help keep bicycles in their designated spaces providing peace of mind to the cyclists that use them. Moreover they prevent the random parking of bicycles, leaving other activities unhindered and preventing accidents. Trash receptacles are also vital in keeping outdoor spaces clean. Colour coded receptacles have even enabled segregation of recyclable trash at source, providing impetus to community attempts at preserving the ecology. Smaller picnic tables meant for families and larger commercial ones, provide a great setting for outings and help restrict food consumption to designated areas, making life easier to picnickers and other users of the space.

So if you still think site furniture is no big deal – think again. Just imagine your home in the city without the outdoor environs and this will help put matters in perspective!
