The phrase “one size fits all” may be relevant to some aspects of life but it certainly doesn’t apply to data storage or marketing requirements. Moreover, whilst the industries current hot topic of “cloud computing” is obviously a good fit for some businesses, the USB stick is still a worthy alternative given the many uses contained in such a small piece of hardware.

The performance of cloud computing, being internet-based, will depend on the speed of a business’s internet and on how many people are accessing what is a shared server. From a storage aspect, file transfers could take longer because of slow internet or heavy demand issues.

For quick and easy transfer of files from one computer to another, or for use as a means of portable backup, the convenience of a USB stick is hard to beat. There are also security issues of course. The use of USB sticks avoids any possible risks that could occur when server access and data confidentiality are in the hands of a third party.

Cost should also be a consideration when looking at storage options. Whilst there is likely to be a monthly service ...
... charge for outsourcing this aspect of a business’s IT function, USB sticks allow a company to buy what they need when they need it.

The marketing benefits of USB sticks have been recognised for some time now by businesses of all sizes and across all industries. What simpler way is there to give a small promotional gift away that is not only of real use to a customer but relays a strong marketing message as well?
Bespoke USB sticks are a hugely popular marketing tool and for good reason. The sticks themselves can be designed in a company’s corporate colours, complete with logo, providing a constant brand reference to the user. What’s more, they can be preloaded with a variety of marketing data such as pop-up websites, company presentations, and sales literature that can be set to run immediately the USB stick is plugged in.

Convenience, security, cost, and impact are all items for businesses to consider when weighing up the many options available for data storage and computer-based marketing. In addition, whilst there is room and a need for all, it is still quite staggering to see just what can be achieved by such a small but beautifully designed USB stick.
