Milk For A Good Night's Sleep
The food and drink you consume before bed, can certainly affect your ability to fall asleep at night. Everyone knows that coffee (caffeine) stimulates and refreshing us up, and that therefore it is not such a good idea to drink coffee before bedtime. Many are not aware that food and drink can have a calming effect. With a generic term we call food and drink that provides a calming effect on sleep, food.
Milk that sleeping bear:
Sleep Food is food and drinks that are especially rich in the amino acid tryptophan. When we get tryptophan in us, is converted rapidly to the amino acid substances serotonin and melatonin. Serotonin and melatonin are drugs which both calms the brain so that it is not so busy anymore, and thus it is easier to fall asleep.
A light evening meal or an evening snack containing food or drink with carbohydrates and tryptophan, the better the chance of falling asleep quickly. Carbohydrates stimulate the body releases the hormone insulin in the body. The insulin in turn stimulates to remove other amino acids that compete with tryptophan in the blood. The brain produces so in turn, melatonin ...
... and serotonin from the amino acid tryptophan.
The combination is important!
While carbohydrates stimulate the uptake of tryptophan in the brain, much protein could inhibit the uptake, thereby making you more alert. Some critics will argue that milk, which contains about as much protein as carbohydrates, is not a good sleep native. But on the contrary, research shows that calcium also is important for the brain to convert tryptophan to melatonin and serotonin. You can safely drink a glass of warm milk, or eat some cottage cheese with hazelnut sprinkle on - both giving it a calmer mind. Or try a bowl of coarse cereal with milk.
But remember that it takes about an hour for the tryptophan to reach the brain, so do not wait too long!
In the UK, is a glass of warm milk strong as last evening snack, but the farmers engaged in organic has gone one step further: They now offer their customers special milk that is extra rich in not only tryptophan, but also the brain's own neurotransmitter, melatonin. The milk is produced by cows milked at night instead of during the day.
All mammals produce the most melatonin at night, and for milk-producing animals is a part of this melatonin into the milk. Those who choose to drink a glass of milk; melatonin is thus an extra supply of the sleep-inducing substance melatonin. Otherwise the milk quite like any other milk, and can be used for everything from hot chocolate for baking or cooking.
