A variety of firms in the UK rely on industrial automation, drive systems and so on in order to function successfully. According to new figures from manufacturers' organisation the EEF, such companies are showing signs of strength.

Its latest business trends study revealed that output and orders among manufacturers rose over the last three months. Meanwhile, of the enterprises polled, 18 per cent noted they plan to increase their capital investment over the coming year. Also, 20 per cent revealed they had increased recruitment.

Car makers and the rest of the transport sector pointed to healthy export balances, while mechanical equipment output and orders were also strong, it was found.

This could mean increased spending on industrial automation, drive systems and other such provisions over coming months.

Responding to the study, EEF chief economist Lee Hopley remarked: "Manufacturers have bucked other recent negative indicators, holding out hope that the recovery has not yet run out of steam. Across much of the sector companies are still busy and orders are holding up, particularly from overseas markets."

However, ...
... he went on to claim that in order to help British firms out, the government needs to concentrate on making certain improvements. He suggested that access to finance must be looked into, while energy-intensive organisations should not be penalised by climate change policy. Mr Hopely also advised that taxes should be lowered and regulation curbed.

Furthermore, he drew attention to the skills of the labour force, stating that they must be enhanced to meet employers' requirements.

Meanwhile, also responding to the findings, Tom Lawton from BDO said: "We should not forget how important small to medium-sized enterprises are for a strong economy - and we should ensure our smaller manufacturing companies are given the support they require to thrive and continue to be an active part of this sector."
