The easiest and healthiest solution to losing weight is a whole foods, plant-based diet, coupled with a reasonable amount of physical activity. This is a long-term lifestyle change, and not just a quick-fix fad diet, and one that can provide sustained weight loss while minimizing the risk of chronic disease.

Have you ever met anyone who eats fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grain foods; avoids animal foods, fast foods, or junk foods, such as chips, French fries and candy bars?

What does this person look like? What is his or her weight like? If you know more than one person like this, you may have noticed that in general they tend to have a healthy weight. Also, think of people living in traditional Asian cultures, where millions of people have been eating a mostly-plant-based diet for centuries. It's difficult to picture these people as obese (at least until recently - because even these cultures are embracing the Western-style, unhealthy eating habits in quickly growing numbers).

Now let's come back to America, and let's imagine a person ordering two hot dogs and a cheeseburger with fries at your local ...
... fast food joint. What might that person look like? The people in these images look completely different, don't they?

Unfortunately, the overweight person munching on hot dogs and fries is rapidly becoming the "all-American" image. I often have visitors from other countries tell me that one of the first things they strike them in the U.S. is the number of people who are overweight or obese.

Losing weight and solving the obesity problem does not require magic tricks, miracle diet pills, or complex diets involving blood types or calorie counting, or buying expensive pre-packaged meals and supplements. Simply follow your instincts and observation, and trust the findings of some impressive research studies, proving time and time again that vegetarians who base their diets on whole plant foods are slimmer and healthier than their meat-eating, fast-food loving counterparts.
