If you are in business, more than likely you're going to be looking for ways that you can reduce your costs without compromising the quality of the products that you are producing. One way that this may be possible is with the computer systems that are utilized by your IT department. Although you certainly would not want to use something that was outdated or was unable to keep up with the technological demands of today's business, you can make some sacrifices which will not impact your business significantly. This can certainly save you a lot of money but there are some ways that you can save even more.
Perhaps something that many of us are considering is purchasing computers that are low cost. It is possible to purchase laptops and desktop computers that are at times, under $200 but are they really going to be worth any savings that are available? There certainly are some benefits to saving money on the computers that you are purchasing but at the same time, there may be some downsides to it as well. Laptops tend to be less expensive than desktops and they do have benefits that are unavailable through a stationary item. For one thing, your staff is going to be able to take them on the road and they will be able to access their information from any location. This can help those that regularly work remotely to keep in regular contact and with the right networking settings, to have access to their information at the office as well. Unfortunately, unless this is set up properly, it can also cause problems with security issues. Additionally, if you go with extremely low priced laptops or PCs, you may end up having downtime as a result of them failing at some point down the road.
One option that many companies are turning to is to purchase used equipment for their IT department. What most people don't realize is the fact that when you get any equipment, regardless of whether it is Cisco or any other type of equipment that is refurbished, it is often in better shape than a brand- new piece of equipment. That is because the testing process that is used for refurbished items is usually stricter than what is used for brand-new items. You would want to make sure, however, that any used equipment that you were purchasing was repaired with genuine or upgraded parts.
The demand for low-cost IT equipment will continue to drive the prices down. You can really use this to your advantage in order to cut costs and to make your business lean. Don't allow it, however, to affect the quality of the product that you are producing or the ability of your employees to work regularly.
