Women who are already taking the drug when they become pregnant or develop stress symptoms in the course of pregnancy and require treatment of the symptoms; doctors should strive to balance the advantage of the drug to the mother and the child. Abrupt withdrawal of the drug is risky to the child and the mother. On the other hand, untreated depression symptoms also affect the health of the child and the mother.

In particular, Paxil increases the level of serotonin, which is believed to enhance mood and alleviate depression.
