A lot of research has been done to determine Paxil side effects in women. The results of the research are disturbing. Women often use the drug as antidepressant for the purpose of controlling anxiety, depressive and obsessive-compulsive disorders as well as premenstrual dysphonic disorder.

Death can result upon cutting the umbilical cord which is the sole supplier of oxygen to the newborns.

Women who are already taking the drug when they become pregnant or develop stress symptoms in the course of pregnancy and require treatment of the symptoms; doctors should strive to balance the advantage of the drug to the mother and the child. Abrupt withdrawal of the drug is risky to the child and the mother. On the other hand, untreated depression symptoms also affect the health of the child and the mother.

Paxil was significantly better than placebo in improvement of the HDRS sub-factor scores, including the depressed mood item, sleep disturbance factor, and anxiety factor.

Paxil is a type of antidepressant called a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor, or SSRI, and works to balance the chemicals in the brain. In particular, Paxil increases the level of serotonin, which is believed to enhance mood and alleviate depression. Paxil is considered to have fewer side effects than many of the other available antidepressants.
