There are many people who do not have a clear understanding of what a vocational college is, what it does and why it is distinct from other learning institutions. In an attempt to create a better understanding of all that pertains to vocational colleges and their role, we must first begin with looking at what a vocational college is.

Vocational colleges are learning institutions that offer training in various crafts with a focus on practical application and practice. Learning in these institutions concentrates on equipping their students with the skills needed to work in various trades. A vocational college trains people to become proficient in particular skills. The learners are taught procedures and processes that are required for production or involved in the delivery of certain services. Examples of skills taught in vocational colleges include hairdressing, carpentry, masonry, painting, electrician, nurse aid and many more.

In the past, most vocational colleges focused on one or two areas that were closely related such as masonry and plumbing. This was mainly due to resource constraints and the need ...
... to maximize on the college facilities available at the time. The vocational college could use the same facilities, resources and trainers for both courses offered by the institution. This has however changed and vocational colleges today offer a wide range of courses in various fields and at different levels.

Most courses offered in vocational training are designed to produce people who have the necessary skills required for the physical and practical components of the production process. It is this very important role of the vocational college that we need to appreciate. Without this segment of the production process economic growth would be impossible.

In most sectors of the economy, the majority of workers are involved in the actual production process. In a factory the group would comprise of machine operators, drivers, loaders, packers, clerks among others. Most of these people are vocational college graduates who are able to perform their duties due to the training that they have acquired from their vocational training. University graduates will not have similar practical exposure to competently deliver when it comes to technical work.

Industrial development in all sectors of the economy relies heavily on the technicians who have acquired skills through vocational colleges as they are the driving force for production. It is for this important reason that governments and other private education sector players need to ensure that vocational colleges are supported and managed so that they can deliver the required work force.

Countries with strong vocational training programs have managed to significantly improve their economies and cut on joblessness as most of their people are equipped for various types of production. Vocational college graduates can easily set up small businesses and industries as they posses the skills need in the production or service delivery. Some examples of technical self employment opportunities for technically equipped individuals includes hairdressers who can set up small shops from where they can serve their clients, carpenters who can operate their own small workshops where they can produce and sell furniture along with many other similar examples. Vocational colleges are therefore an important factor in the economic development of any country.
