Why Invisible Braces Give You A Great Smile

Invisalign braces are the hot trend in dentistry. They are inconspicuous while being worn, and are a very convenient way to straighten teeth that are crooked – misaligned, as the dental professionals say. While wire and bracket braces are still in wide use, and there are legitimate reasons for using this time-tested technique, it is possible today to straighten your teeth more discreetly.

Are invisible braces truly not visible? They are made of a see-through plastic resin which is virtually undetectable when worn. Clearly they are more discreet than shiny metallic dental fittings. This makes them very popular with adults, who may be embarrassed at investing in teeth straightening (that’s teenager stuff!). These less visible dental systems are also becoming the rage with teens, for the same reason. Adolescence is bad enough without a mouth full of metal calling attention to itself.

While the advantages may seem purely cosmetic, that is not the whole story. Dentists are very enthusiastic about them because they can be removed by the wearer, allowing them to practice all of their regular oral hygiene ...
... habits. They also can be removed for eating. So there is no food getting stuck, and there is no reason not to floss and brush your teeth. While the teeth are being realigned, the teeth are also getting the care they need to remain healthy – and eventually more attractive.

How long does it take to use a new, inconspicuous teeth straightening system? Many patients see results in as little as 6 months, or as much as 15. It is a gradual process, just as with metal braces. Here is how it works:

The dentist makes an imprint of the configuration of the patient’s teeth. This “impression” is sent away to the manufacturer, who then produces between 18 and 30 transparent plastic resin “trays”. These trays are worn over the teeth, steadily guiding them into new alignment. Most people wear each set of trays for about two weeks, and then they move on to the next set, and so on. The teeth are gradually adjusting each week. A wearer removes the braces when they eat, drink, floss or brush. They go back to see their orthodontist about every two months to ten weeks. Depending upon the severity of the misalignment of the teeth, they will have a smile they love to flash within one year, or slightly more. Invisible braces work!
