Here is another little bit of piano wisdom to help you learn why tuning a piano is such an important regular maintenance. Regularly tuning a piano can extend the life of your instrument by decades, and either prevent or extend the time before you need costly repairs. Here is another answer to a common question:
Question: If I spot a crack or cracks in the piano, is that cause for alarm?
Only if your piano is brand new. Cracks in the soundboard of a new piano are highly unusual, and could indicate that the crate the piano was delivered in was dropped. If the piano comes with a warrantee, call the store and ask for a different piano, or a substantial adjustment of the price.
On an older piano, especially a vintage instrument dating back to the early part of the 1900’s, cracks in ...
... the soundboard are found more often than not. Ordinarily, the piano does just fine despite them. The notion that a piano with a cracked soundboard can’t be tuned is an old wives’ tale. In regards to tuning stability, most often it is other factors, such as loose tuning pins, are more important when tuning a piano than a crack in the soundboard.
Charles Flaum, well known as a highly skilled piano tuner / piano technician, tuning a piano has been a Registered Piano Technician with an active clientele for over 20 years. After studying music at Berklee College of Music in the early 1980’s he completed his education by taking the two year course in Advanced Piano Technology from North Bennet Street School, the oldest trade school in America. NBSS uses the Swedish system of craftsmanship training known as “sloyd,” focusing on the development of character and intellectual capacity, as well as technical skills. Sloyd, means “craft” or “hand skills.” Via his trade Charles found a way to combine his passion for music, problem solving and mechanics, and developed the hand skills needed to restore and care for beautiful musical instruments. Currently Charles is recording a video series exploring the intricacies of pianos, including many fascinating [and sometimes amusing] stories about the history of these complex instruments http://www.rocklandpianotuning.com.
