Games have been played throughout the history of man. Starting from make believe kids games like peek-a-boo to them playing imaginary games in their back yard during summer vacation. The broadest definition for a game is “a form of entertainment”. But a classic board game can be defined as a game played on a board. Some classic board games are even played with sticks and pebbles that our ancestors used and the tradition is still carried on in many countries.
Each country has a history of their own board game, but some common classic board games can be classified as follows:
• In America, the Settlers of Catan, is a true classic board game played among three or four members and the age group of ten years to an adult. It’s a fine balance between luck and skill. Players have to compete to collect resources to build roads, cities and settlements. This can be expanded to increase players as well as the area of play.
• In Puerto Rico there exists a deluxe classic board games meant for players between the age group of three to five and twelve ...
... and above. This is a game of deep strategy, with players having to follow to their path of victory. It is about players growing tea, coffee, corn, indigo, sugar, and tobacco and eventually getting their products on the ship for sale.
• In England, I’m the Boss is another classic board game and is played with six or more players between the ages of twelve and above. This is basically a fun game and should not be taken seriously. Players move around the board trying to make deals but have to take the help of the opponents. The fact of the game is that since the opponents are not included, the players can be sent out by the opponents.
• Chess, Scrabble, Snakes n Ladders, and Monopoly are other classic board games that are played and enjoyed by children and adults.
A jigsaw puzzle is a game of optical illusion and basically played to improve the concentration power of the children. It requires the assembly of small parts that are broken up to form a big picture if put together properly. Jigsaw puzzles were originally created by painting a picture on a flat rectangle piece of wood and then cut up into pieces and given to children to put together again.
Jigsaw puzzles normally have scenes of nature, buildings, mountains or castles. But today they also include pictures of celebrities and at times even maps. In fact, one can create a jigsaw puzzle of any picture depending on the age group. The shapes of most jigsaw puzzles are round, square or rectangle and are time bound to solve.
