Strangely, it’s not the press, a minister, pastor, parent, politician or advocacy group against violence that’s saying video games had anything to do with the shooting in Norway, it’s the terrorist suspect himself claiming that video games helped train him for the murder of more than 90 people. According to the Aussie website The West, terrorist suspect Anders Behring Breivik wrote in his manifesto that Activision’s World of Warcraft and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 helped to train him for his mission, saying…
“I just bought Modern Warfare 2, the game. It is probably the best military simulator out there and it’s one of the hottest games this year. I see MW2 more as a part of my training-simulation than anything else,”… “Once you decide to strike, it is better to kill too many than not enough, or you risk reducing the desired ideological impact of the strike,”
All right, let me interject something right here and say that any moron who thinksModern Warfare 2 is the “best” military simulator out there — and to use it as a training device for real life warfare — isn’t just off the deep-end, ...
... they’re a bona fide lunatic and a sincerely disturbed fanboy of the worst kind. As for this guy saying World of Warcraft helped train him…really? Is he serious? That sounds like bullspit to me. I mean, did he use the dungeon raiding to help him corral the people where he wanted? Was the PvP somehow so distressing and frustrating that it was his impetus to kill people in real life? Maybe all the races and classes on the game was to help him develop the hatred he needed for different races and classes to kill more effortlessly in real life? I guess all those Elves bragging about being big-shots just pushed him over the edge because he was a W4L (Worgen for life)? I don’t know, but World of Warcraft used as a training tool to kill almost sounds as idiotic as if Colin Powell said small images that looked like firetrucks in fuzzy pictures was enough of a reason to invade Iraq. Now I know for most companies all press is good press but this is not the kind of press Activision should be hoping for…or maybe it is, I don’t know it’s ran by a bunch of greedy, pork-bellied top-hats so it could be the kind of press they were hoping for, maybe. They’re probably twinkling their moustaches and tapping their feet in the air over the news right now but who knows? Anyway, Breivik is apparently part of some neo-Knights Templar sect on a late-than-never revenge spree against Islam, and the real scary part is that there may be more people out there like him. And if this guy did this much damage playingWorld of Warcraft and Call of Dutythen I’d hate to see what kind of damage someone like him could have done honing their skills from a series like Battlefield..
