Love Your Enemies
One of my living heroes is Nelson Mandela, he is a man who really ‘walks the talk’.
I saw a film very recently about the life of a guard who was transferred everywhere that Nelson Mandela was incarcerated. He was a white South African, who could speak Mandela’s African dialect and the authorities thought that they could better keep an eye on what was termed as Mandela’s secret subversive activities. It showed over the years how Mandela through his words and actions, shifted the belief system of this guard. He has got tremendous will and the power of intention.
I’ve never had the privilege to meet Mr Mandela, although in many ways he features quite a lot in my daily work. He seems to have an amazing sense of decency, a sense of compassion and a sense of concern, and what amazes me is that he never seems to complain about the treatment of his 27 years in prison. The other great quality he appears to have is the humility and he is a humble man. It was a time to celebrate for me when I read him first time.
So many people today seem to have bitterness and cynical comments to pass about others, I have ...
... not read anything of those behaviors ever have being attributed to Mr Mandela.
I recently was afforded the honor of being the keynote speaker at the graduation of the business and law faculties of a university. I closed my address with the speech that Nelson Mandela delivered at his inauguration, as president of South Africa. Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you NOT to be? You are a child of God your playing small does not serve the world.
Beginning today I realized that there is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us, it is in every one. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
