History has throughout the ages given us incomparable works of art, wondrous in their depiction of life as we know it. Luckily, fine art in London is not difficult to come by be it for purchasing or simply for viewing. Visitors to London find the world of art opened up to them and can be awed by the different art techniques that emerged during different eras of history.

A popular form were the Impressionists, spear headed by Monet. Impressionism depicted an essence of the subject rather than a clear cut definition. Colours and shorter brush strokes were used to create the painting, with the colours being allowed to blend slightly at the edges, creating a softer effect. Impressionists painted out of doors mostly, with inspiration being found in almost any scene that captured their attention. The sunrise, a picnic, a haystack or a river, were just some of the common place subjects that received a not so common place depiction.

Impressionism veered away from the paintings that were done in a studio with their clearly demarcated lines and boundaries. The Impressionists used colour to showcase the subject with objects ...
... blending seamlessly into one another.

Humans have always wanted in some way to capture the essence of their time, leave a mark for future generations to find and understand. During the 19th century, the world was opening up to people, influences were strong and with booming businesses, more and more people had the cash and the time to create works of art. Impressionists broke away from the tried and tested and took the courageous decision to create their work through the use of colour. It was a time of experimentation, a time when artists wanted to find their own niche in representing the world as they saw it.

We of the ‘modern’ age are blessed that artists took the time and effort, often suffering financial constraints and ridicule to produce their works of art. These works of art enrich the world by their very existence. It reminds us of a slower paced world, a world which was full of potential and discovery. It takes us to a time when humans were at their creative best. Art makes us stop, appreciate and think. We need art to make us slow down and appreciate our lives.
