While browsing around the web looking for information about the insurance industry, I discovered that there were lots of other interesting and fun ways to search for things in my industry. That may sound like a bit of a shock to most, but since I work in the insurance industry full time and spend the majority of my time in front of a computer working, I don't find much time to play around online.
I usually am looking for other companies online that offer insurance quotes and information about my industry around the nation, since I do a lot of analysis of the insurance industry in all 50 states. While finding some pretty great resources from some of the state and federal government sites, I also noticed a lot of not so informative sites out there that were either outdated, or were just lousy landing pages.
Well after running into about 50 of these less than professional insurance websites, I decided to see if I could find different types of coverage in small geographic areas (small towns) and see what I came up with. Well, as you can imagine, most all of the major areas in the US are owned online by the major insurance ...
... companies. Well, if I decided I didn't want to deal with one of the major companies, and instead deal directly with an independent agent in a small town, then I needed to try and narrow my searches down to the smallest, most specific things I could think of. Here is an example:
Let's say I live in the town of Bonanza, Utah (population of 1!) and I wanted to get an insurance quote for auto insurance in my town, I would do a search for "auto insurance Bonanza Utah". Well, since I am probably the only person that lives there I may not be able to sell myself an auto insurance policy (actually, I could!). But if I begin increasing my search queries to the next largest town next to me by searching and including the names of the nearest towns, all of a sudden I start to those insurance agents will start appearing in the search results that are near by. If I keep increasing the geographic region of my search criteria to include counties such as "auto insurance Uintah County" I have increased the possibility of finding what I am looking for since more people live in the county than in my small town.
Keeping going with that same trend and increasing the search to include the name of the next largest town; "auto insurance Jensen Utah". Now since there are more people in the town of Jensen, the chances of me actually finding an insurance agent close by is better, and I will have the opportunity to talk with someone in my area that understands the type of people in the region and the lifestyles.
I found some really cool little insurance agencies in different parts of the country and even called a few to conduct some of my research and had a great time talking with people that worked for them.
