The International Career Path—a Few Pointers

Would you like to work abroad? Does an assignment abroad excite you? Would you like to gain valuable exposure with an international job contract? If you answered yes to these questions, you are not alone. Hop on to the bandwagon of a growing number of professionals who are eager to spend time away from home and gain international experience in their sphere of work.
No opportunities! Who is to blame?
Whether it is a person from the third world, a developing country, or the new world, international job opportunities excite everyone. However, such opportunities, although available, frequently remain elusive. You may blame geography, borders, education, or the governments and their system, however, fact remains that companies will invest in you if you are the right candidate.
Internet and you
You may ask, ‘What are the things keeping me from that elusive opportunity?’ Well, for starters it could be that you are just not looking in the right places. Just because a certain company or area has worked for professionals in your field doesn’t mean that there are innumerable opportunities available! Saturation ...
... is quick when an international job opportunity is open. Secondly, however good you are, without the proper visibility you are at a disadvantage. Building an impeccable resume is half the job accomplished; getting it to be seen by potential employers is another story.
Where international job portals and the internet have proved a boon for most occupations and job searches, a strong network is equally important. The internet is your best friend! Identify potential employers and apply early, upgrade your resume frequently, and communicate with responsible personnel.
What are they looking for?
While the international job search path may be distraught with a host of issues, employers do look for flexibility and someone who adapts easily. Bringing that something extra to the table also goes a long way. Whether it is jobs in languages, hospitality, fashion, engineering, media, or even healthcare, your soft skills comprise an equally important part of your success.
Many (if not all) occupations require good people skills in addition to technical expertise. This is especially true of jobs in languages, hospitality, and related fields. Such fields frequently present excellent openings for job seekers and readily hire international talent. These occupations, by the nature of work therein, are global. This means language skills may be highly valued.
Another thought to consider for almost any occupation is that an employer may be interested in professionals or individuals with specific linguistic knowledge that helps cater to specific community needs. Highlighting your strength in this regard when applying to such jobs in languages spoken within local communities could be a helpful ‘extra’ on your profile.
International jobs can be procured through effective self-marketing and networking while using technology as a reliable platform. These may enable you to distinguish yourself from the herd. The sweet paychecks are an added bonus! For more info visit http://careerlingual.com/
