The world is becoming a smaller place and with people constantly moving homes, the lines between cultures and regions are quickly disappearing! Countries are continually seeing migration and dissipation of knowledge. Talent and competence has taken precedence in these times of stiff competition. Relocation is frequently accompanied by migration of families, for those who have pre existing ties, thereby leading to a mish mash of cultures and language. This phenomenon is not limited to any one region and neither is it one involving only the developed world; it is truly global!
Globalization and insecurity
Countries and the workforce therein are facing new challenges. With an increasing number of bilingual candidates vying for job positions, natives sometimes find themselves at a disadvantage. This may be evident in hatred and intolerance related issues frequently reported. Thus, many nations are now including multiple languages in their education system while some are modeled on bilingualism.
Coping with language barriers
With a growing number of residents and clientele being non-native, it is in the interest ...
... of local companies and firms to involve bilingual candidates in their workforce, frequently to reach a particular community and at other times to make their services accessible to a greater number of the population. The field of language is thus seeing considerable growth and an increasing number of language candidates with experience in more than just the global language—English—are bringing variegated skills to the table.
The concept of appealing to consumers in their own language is not new. The mention of certain local idioms or jargon, if you may call it, makes people feel less intimidated by something new. A bilingual candidate may help such individuals identify easily with the unknown, by introducing the services to them as ‘one of their own’.
Taking it further…with language
Now-a-days many businesses look at expansion with a global perspective, and intercontinental business relationships are common. However, in many parts of the world, it is imperative that a language candidate with knowledge about local customs and etiquette in addition to the language is present on the team; it frequently helps seal that essential deal faster. Bilingual candidates, and frequently multilingual, are thereby many a times preferred for a myriad job titles. In today’s times, language skills are thus considered an essential and important part of your repertoire.
On the other spectrum are regions where bilingual candidates face increasing challenges. As aforementioned, competition does not always inspire, sometimes it sparks rivalry often expressed in the form of hatred. It may help language candidates in such instances to reach out to others who are ‘in the same boat’ so that they may help each other and provide support for localized groups therein.
With such challenging scenarios all over the world, bilingual candidates may see their skills put to greater use, providing greater satisfaction and fulfillment from their designations than what would otherwise be just another job. For more info visit http://careerlingual.com/
