Skilled – Sponsored (migrant) Visa (subclass 176)

This visa is permanent visa for people who are unable to meet the Skilled – Independent requirements. Applicants must be either sponsored by an eligible relative living in Australia or nominated by a participating state or territory government. This visa allows you to migrate to Australia if you have competent English language and other skills and attributes which will contribute the most to the Australian economy. This visa uses a points test to select visa applicants with characteristics needed in the Australian labour market.
Who is this visa for?
The applicant must:
be under 50 years of age
have competent English language skills
have the skills and qualifications that meet the Australian standard for an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL)
This visa also requires that either the main applicant or partner:
have an eligible relative living in Australia who is willing and able to sponsor
or
have a nomination from a participating State or Territory government agency.

Australian permanent residents can:
live and work in Australia on a permanent basis
study in Australia at school, Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector or university
receive subsidised healthcare through Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)
access certain social security payments (subject to waiting periods)
be eligible for Australian citizenship (subject to the residency eligibility criteria)
sponsor people for permanent residence.
To be nominated by a State or Territory government, the applicant must satisfy specific criteria, by the particular State or Territory. These may include:
having an occupation on the skills shortage list in that State or Territory; or
demonstrating specialized skills in a particular region of that State or Territory
The applicant has to sign an undertaking stating that he and his dependents will continue to live, work and study in the State or Territory for an initial period of 2 years.
The applicant will be granted a permanent multiple entry visa for a period of 5 years. Permanent residents may also be eligible for Australian citizenship.
