Torquay - the famous town in the area of Torbay of Devon is an excellent tourist destination. It is a fashionable seaside resort with a healthy climate and is often dubbed the Queen of the English Riviera. Torquay lies 26 km south of Exeter and 60 km north east of Plymouth and adjoins Paignton on the west of the bay. It is the third largest settlement in the county of Devon in terms of population, although this number almost quadruples during the peak summer season. There is much to do in Torquay - family friendly attractions, breathtaking coastal views, delicious local food and drinks and excellent beaches just to name a few.

One of the most notable events in Torquay is the Agatha Christie Festival which is a weeklong celebration of the author’s life and times. This is held every September and consists of plays, tours and murder mystery entertainment. The festival is always a success and draws a large number of fans from all over the world. This year the festival is from 11th to 18th September, and promises to be an exciting adventure.

Another exciting feature of Torquay is its 22 mile coastline - this is a ...
... fascinating ecosystem that boasts several award winning beaches. Ten of these beaches have gained Blue Flag status and Quality Coast Awards for the year 2011. These include Maidencombe Beach, Oddicombe Beach, Anstey’s Cove, Meadfoot Beach and Torrey Abbey Sands. These beaches are mostly sand and shingle, with ample parking facilities. Dogs are allowed in certain beaches, so make sure you find out which ones are pet friendly beforehand.

With several miles of sheltered waters, Torquay offers an excellent location to watch or participate in watersports such as scuba diving and sailing. The coastline also has a footpath, which is a part of the South West Coast Path National Trail, which leads through a huge diversity of ornamental and natural sites.

Another attraction in Torquay is the English Riviera Global Geopark. Four years ago, the English Riviera was designated with UNESCO Geopark status, which is awarded to areas of outstanding geological, ecological, archaeological and cultural interest. The English Riviera Geopark is unique as it is the world’s first urban Geopark. There are three Geopark Information Centres located at Kents Cavern in Torquay, Berry Head in Brixham and the Seashore Centre in Paignton.

These are just a handful of the many things one can do on a Torquay holiday. There are several accommodation options close to these attractions including Torquay hotels. Visit “English Riviera” to find a hotel in Torquay.
