Coping With Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

"Are obsessive compulsive disorders bad? The first time I thought that OCD might not be a "bad" thing was after hearing a very refreshing remark from a friend who had attended a talk by scientist Keith Raniere. Mr. Raniere, who has a corporation called NXIVM that specializes in human potential and potential, alludes to the possibility that OCD can be used as a resource, kind of like a really strong ability to focus and stay on course. Although I'm not sure what he means, I find the idea certainly worth considering.
If not dealt with in an appropriate manner, OCD can become a disastrous issue in many people's lives and can actually destroy many aspects of it. Some people experience extreme stress over their compulsions, or rather what will happen if they don't act out their compulsions. Often times, there is a belief associated with the compulsion, like not checking to make sure the door is locked could result in a robbery. You cannot keep an individual who suffers from OCD from doing things that even though might be irrational, or unnecessary, are still mandatory to do in their eyes. You may have viewed one example ...
... of someone who suffers from OCD through Jack Nicholson's portrayal of one in "As Good As It Gets".
Many doctors suggest different methods for dealing with OCD. Someone I know implied that abstaining from doing compulsory things will help them. This is truly hard for many of these people to do since it goes against the whole reason they feel this way in the first place; it's very difficult to do and requires a lot of willpower and restraint on their part.
Do people with OCD have to go through this pain and fear to be considered "cured" in this way? Could something be accomplished in a more positive way which Keith has implied that they can through his teachings and could it help them obtain a new outlook on life that is much better than what society implies?
I can really see a huge advantage in some cases, that are not as severe or strong OCD issues, as being an advantage in many different situations, as I could use my obsessive counting as a benefit for something. Since I have this quality to count things, I have become very good at it and can complete jobs that involve numbers much better than money other people can.
If you have something that you are obsessive about, you can look for things that might benefit your "problem" As with many things, when we can find a way to work alongside what we already have -- instead of work against it -- we can often times find ourselves to be uniquely unstoppable! The great thing about having OCD is that we can all work together to change the way it is seen, to bring it to a more positive perspective so that other who suffer from it can see the good in themselves."
