It can be overwhelming to look at the different kinds of chairs out there for restaurants, but they usually fall into the following categories. There are a few outliers that don’t fall into these categories, or complex custom designs that are referred to as designer back chairs, but here is a general introduction into the different types.

Ladder Back Chairs
These are Restaurant Chairs with a wood or upholstered seat that have a wooden back with horizontal slats across the back that look like the rungs of a ladder. These chairs are stylish and can go in almost any type of setting.

Vertical Back Chairs
These are restaurant chairs with vertical slats. They are also appropriate in any type of setting. A type of Vertical Back Chair is the Fan Back Chair in which the slats start going straight up, then fan out as they near the top.

Schoolhouse Chairs
These were modeled after the wooden schoolhouse chairs before today’s cheaper but less aesthetically pleasing plastic bucket chair ...
... started being used. The classic schoolhouse chairs have vertical slats and a shallow ridge or point at the top of the chair back. They are extremely sturdy and popular for use in bars all around the country.

WIndow Back Chairs
These restaurant chairs contain vertical and horizontal evenly-crossing slats. Two vertical slats and two horizontal slats are typical but not always the case. The similar Lattice Back Chair contains vertical and horizontal slats crossing in irregular patterns, or even slats crossing in an “X” pattern.

X-Back Chairs
These chairs have a slat pattern that makes a single “X” on the back of the chair. These can look very stylish and are often seen in upscale bistros and cafes.

Options
Most Restaurant Furniture companies provide a plethora of options for selecting chairs. There are metal chairs and wood chairs. The wood chairs have different wood types and wood stains. Then there are options with upholstering or not, and the different types and colors of vinyl that these chairs are upholstered with. Don’t ever be afraid to ask!Restaurant furniture companies are usually very happy to provide different options that will give the customer exactly what they need.
