Healthy eating is one of the most important things you can do to improve your general health. But how can we do that? Is it difficult for us to develop a habit of healthy eating? After reading this text, you will find the answer is ‘no’. In fact, it is very easy to adopt the healthy eating habits by following these simple principles.

Eat a variety of different foods. No one food contains all the proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals you need for good health, so you have to eat a range of different foods.

Eat vegetables and/or fruits every day. Vegetables and fruits are an important part of a healthy and balanced meal. They supply the vitamins and minerals that keep the body functioning and the immune system strong. Eat a wide variety as each one provides different vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber.

Always have breakfast. This ensures that your body won’t go into starvation-preservation mode and also provides your body and brain with energy so you can be on top of your game. Don’t forget it also revs up your metabolism for all-day calorie-burning power!

Beware Hidden ...
... Fats and Sugars (and Sodium).Much of our intake of fat and sugar and sodium is typically from packaged or prepared foods, such as: sauces, packet foods, sodas, candy, soups and so on. You can't avoid these types of food, but you should check the label and choose brands that are lower in sugar, saturated fat ("hydrogenated" or "trans-fats") and sodium.

Eat less salt. Even if you don’t add salt to your food, you may still be eating too much. About three-quarters of the salt we eat is already in the food we buy, such as breakfast cereals, soups, breads and sauces. Eating too much salt can raise your blood pressure. People with high blood pressure are more likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke. Use food labels to help you cut down. More than 1.5g of salt per 100g means the food is high in salt. Adults and children over 11 should eat no more than 6g of salt a day. Younger children should have even less.

Drink plenty of water. Scientists recommend that we drink around 8 (250mls) glasses of water a day. The best indicator of how much water you should drink however is their own body when you are thirsty to drink. Water helps to complete, and if you eat only when hungry, it means you’ll eat less without feeling like you’re starving. It also helps eliminate toxins from your body that may interfere with normal metabolism of the body. Your body is 70% water so it makes sense to maintain normal hydration levels. That’s said, a great way to get water, while getting food is through the consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Stop eating as soon as you feel full. Practice pushing away your plate with food still on it when you've had enough. Don't aim to wipe the plate clean, and don't eat until you feel stuffed. Eat until you're comfortably satisfied. Reward yourself each time you succeed in doing this (but not with food!) - read a good book, watch a movie, spend some time out with friends - do something you really enjoy, to encourage yourself to stick with this good habit.

You are an intelligent person. You’ve understood what I said. Try to incorporate the above suggestions on how to eat. Start with one of them, the practice for a week (or until you’re used to it), then start another. Go for it, and stick to it! You know you can.
