Student Subclass Options

Under the Australian migration Student Visa Program, the Australia student visa comprises of 8 subclasses which are based on the education sector of the Australian visa applicant’s main course of study.

The Student subclass options available are:

1.English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) (Subclass 570) Visa

2.Primary or Secondary School Course (Subclass 571) Visa

This is for applicants wanting to complete a course of study at primary, junior secondary or senior secondary school courses and approved secondary school exchange programs

3.Vocational Education and Training (VET) (Subclass 572) Visa

This is for applicants who want to study Certificate I, II, III, IV, (except ELICOS), VET diploma, VET advanced diploma, vocational graduate certificate or vocational graduate diploma courses.

4.Higher Education (Subclass 573) Visa

This is for applicants who want to study a Bachelors Degree, Associate Degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diplomas, Higher Education Diploma, Higher Education Advanced Diploma or Masters by coursework.

5.Postgraduate Research (Subclass 574) Visa

This is for applicants who want to study a Masters by research and Doctoral Degrees

6.Non-award (Subclass 575)

This applies to non-award foundation studies, or other full-time courses or components of courses not leading to an Australian award

7.AusAID and Defence

This is for students sponsored by AusAID or the Australian Department of Defence undertaking full-time courses of any type

8.Student Guardians (Subclass 580)

This visa is for parents or relatives who want to stay in Australia as the guardian of a student who is studying in Australia

Entry Requirements

To be granted a student (Subclass 570–576) visa, applicants must meet key requirements, which include:

must be accepted for full-time study in a registered course or part of a registered course

must meet financial capacity

English language proficiency

must be of good character

must be of sound health

must have acceptable health insurance through the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the applicant and the accompanying family members

must have no outstanding debts to the Commonwealth of Australia

To be granted a Student Visa you will be assessed against two main factors:

Your Passport Nationality;

Type of Student Visa you wish to apply for

A Student Visa is a temporary visa and is valid only for the duration of your course. Once your course is completed, you will be required to leave Australia by the date indicated on your visa. However, you may be entitled to apply for another Temporary Visa or even Permanent Residence before your visa expires.
