The material Inconel 625 was first developed in the 1940’s by teams of researchers at Wiggin Works in Hereford. It was first developed as part of the research into the Whittle jet engine, but has subsequently found its own place in the market and is used all over the world in a variety of applications.

The main benefits of Inconel 625 over other types of metal are their ability to resist corrosion and oxidation, meaning they will not rust and weather in quite the same way as other materials do. These alloys are well suited for use in extreme environments because of their strong, tough properties. When heated, Inconel 625 forms a thick oxide layer which protects the surface from further melting, giving the material the ability to retain its strength over a huge temperature range. This allows the product to be used in places where more widely used metals such as steel and aluminium would start to melt or bend.

The material is most often found in extreme environments where no other metal would be up to the job. Typical places to install Inconel 625 include places where the material will be in contact with extreme ...
... temperatures or water for a good proportion of its life. Seawater applications can be particularly tricky as the combination of water and salt can cause even the best alloy to crumble after a while, but Inconel 625 has proven to be one of the best in the marine environment.

Unsurprisingly, Inconel 625 is used often in gas turbine blades, seals and combustors and is often used as a component in turbochargers. It will also be found in chemical processing plants due to its acid resistant properties as well as well pump motors, heat exchangers, incinerators and even in the exhaust systems of formula 1 vehicles.

As with any design question, there are many different tools for different jobs, or in the case of Inconel 625 there are many different alloys which are all specialists at different jobs. However, if you are looking for a tough, solid material with a reputation to match, then this is the alloy for you. If your project involves extremely high temperatures, contact with water or high pressures then Inconel 625 is the best choice for the job.

SPM.co.uk is an online company that supplies a range of piping products and materials which are used in different industries, including the nickel based alloy Inconel 625.
