Why do you need car insurance? Simple: it saves your life and money whenever your car gets in trouble. That's supposed to be the reason why many people have their cars insured. On the other hand, there are some insurance companies that leave some car owners with a bad experience.

Here are five horror stories that have haunted the insurance industry

1. Useless customer service

Davis had an accident with another driver, Josh. Josh, the person at fault, took the responsibility; he called up the insurance customer service and explained things in detail. The horrifying tale began when Josh's insurance agent made contact and told Davis they would pay only half of the damage, citing inconsistencies as the reason behind the decision.

When Davis talked with the agent, he answered, "Well sir, customer service information is independent from our own investigation and decision." Did anybody explain customer service and the insurance company are independent from each other? Apparently, nobody did.

2. Unreliable in times of trouble

Shelley was stuck ...
... in a dangerous road in Michigan. The most reliable help she could get was her road aid assistance, which was covered under her car insurance.

She waited for hours, but no help came.

When she tried calling another towing service, they arrived immediately; and she knew something was wrong. Guess what she'd learned about her insurance company: Towing services doesn't like to do business with insurance companies, because they don’t pay well for the service.

3. Unfixed car and rental fee

Not all big insurance companies can be trustworthy. This is what Dianne learned after a horrible experience with her insurance company. Dianne had a hit and run accident on an Illinois road. The car insurance company took the car in for repair. Dianne was given a rental car. The insurance company looked pretty responsible so far.

All was fine until the rental car service called telling her the car should be returned, for the insurance company was no longer paying the bill. To make matters worse, the car repair wasn't finished yet. Now, she was trapped with the car rental fee and unfinished car repair.

4. Put the blame on you

Micca was about to make a turn into the proper lane when she was accidentally bumped by a reckless uninsured motorist. But that's okay, because her insurance carries an uninsured motorist coverage.

Now, it's time to file the claim, and surprisingly it was neglected. The reason was contributory negligence on the part of the driver insured. Micca was blamed for not taking the necessary precautions on taking a left turn.

5. Swindle your money

Warning: Money swindling can begin upon filling out a quote form.

Kelly filled out one such form, and one question asked, "Have you been in an accident within the past three years?" And her definite answer was "no." After a few weeks, Kelly received an email from her agent stating she owed the company more because her car had been in an accident over six years ago.

Kelly was surprised. No one ever mentioned the insurance company would investigate accidents over six years. Unfortunately, now she needs to pay more for her "incorrect" answer on the quote form.

Before applying for an insurance policy, make sure to read and understand the details included. Also, don't hesitate to talk with your car insurance agent. Search for car insurance online and choose only the most reputable agencies.
