Destination Costa Rica: The Perfect Wedding - By Michael Brown

Perhaps it was destiny. But who can say? It can sometimes seem as if this beautiful nation, fringed with 750 miles (1200 kilometers) of pristine gold and white beaches, all adorned with untold millions of tropical blooms, was made to host the ideal destination wedding.
There are so many stunning settings available throughout beautiful Costa Rica, a captivating mélange of steaming hot springs, wondrous waterfalls, and waves that reflect the glittering stars. Sprinkled throughout this natural wonderland is Central America’s sweetest assortment of luxury properties, each awaiting your arrival with every pleasure a honeymoon could promise. While your wedding is sure to be a sweet memory for all of your guests, much more magic remains here in paradise to share just with your loved one.
There are more than a dozen professional wedding planners able to help plan every detail of your ceremony, from photography and flowers to transportation and paperwork. Some specialize in small, intimate nuptials, others in bigger, flashy events; most offer specialty options including sunset ceremonies, as well as getting married ...
... on a boat. At Mead Brown, we love working with the very professional and dependable team at Tropical Occasions, due to their talent for custom, concept weddings honed with more than 50 events each year.
Adventurous couples who feel especially close to Costa Rica might even want to find out about a traditional Tico wedding. These are elaborate affairs, steeped in Roman Catholic ritual, and attended by both extended families. The bride to be usually wears a lacey dress and veil, while the groom says his vows in a shirt embroidered by his future wife. The classic ceremony is accompanied by a big party, with plenty of food, live music, and dancing.
It’s easy and straightforward for foreigners to marry in Costa Rica, however, there is, of course, some paperwork. Make an effort to submit yours 1 month ahead of the wedding-although the technical cutoff date is ten days prior, things may progress more slowly. Some websites still mention an older law requiring divorcees to wait 300 days to remarry, to safeguard the paternity of unborn children. This has changed, and so ladies can merely provide the results from a negative pregnancy test (in addition to a divorce decree), and set whatever date for the wedding they’d like.
If you speak some Spanish, it’s certainly possible to arrange the ceremony yourself; the closest Costa Rican consulate can help you get started. Needless to say, it’s always easier to employ a wedding coordinator, many of which offer package deals or “a la carte” services, such as lawyers, pastry chefs, shuttle drivers, or even the two witnesses required by law (among many other things). Same-sex marriages are not yet legal, but many planners are content to organize commitment ceremonies.
Though that pristine beach, streaked in sunset hues, might appear to be merely a dream, but it’s easier than you would imagine to start out your marriage here in the world’s happiest place. Whether you'll need hotel rooms for the guests, an archway lavishly draped in heliconias, a vegetarian buffet, or even a honeymoon as wild or as pampered as you’ve always imagined, it’s easy to set up in Costa Rica. Feel free to contact Mead Brown for destination wedding information and recommendations on enjoying your Costa Rica vacation.
