Reducing Your Waistline Could Make It Easier To Breathe
As you age, the risk of developing diabetes or heart disease can be cause for real concern.
It’s not exactly breaking health news that an aging heart undergoes changes even if it is not showing signs of disease.
The muscles relax less between beats.
The pumping chambers become stiffer and work less efficiently.
The heart doesn’t pump as strongly as it once did.
The older heart can’t respond as well to exercise either.
It can’t increase the rate of its contractions like it did in a person’s youth. That 50-yard dash becomes almost impossible, because the heart can’t get enough oxygen to the muscles.
And, as far as diabetes goes, as we age, we can become more insulin-resistant.
Being sedentary and overweight increases the risk of becoming insulin resistant even more.
Diabetes is a huge problem right now amongst the elderly.
The latest health news is that a growing waistline can impair. Researchers now have proof that, if you manage your waistline, you could significantly boost your lung function. ...
...
A team of scientists at the Center for American Indian Health Research, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, investigated whether reduced lung function is associated with metabolic syndrome and diabetes in American Indians.
Specifically, they wanted to determine whether lower pulmonary function presents before the development of either disease.
Using data from The Strong Heart study, the research team found that reduced lung function was independently associated with metabolic syndrome and with diabetes, and impaired lung function presents before the development of the conditions.
They suggest that these associations may result from the effects of obesity and inflammation and that, conversely, reducing weight could improve lung function.
The good news in all of this is that a large waistline (and trouble breathing) is entirely within your control to change.
Diet and exercise can be made a daily part of your routine.
The shedding of pounds can be achieved slowly. And exercises can be added as you strengthen your body and become more fit.
If you would like to slim down a bit to boost your lung function, get your doctor’s advice.
He or she may be able to recommend some weight-reduction strategies. Paying careful attention to your nutritional health should pay immediate dividends when it comes to lowering your weight and being able to breathe easier.
