Plenty of things to do – Downtown Playa del Carmen is truly the heart of the Riviera Maya. Not only does it include many restaurants, cafes, bars with live music (everything from mariachi to country to jazz), galleries, etc., but it offers a very distinct atmosphere. The narrow streets, small city blocks, low-rise buildings, nicely designed stores and restaurants all add a nice atmosphere that makes doing all of these things more pleasant. Also important is that all of these things to do are within walking distance. It is easy and pleasant to walk to the spa, to the bar, to the café or to the local fruit and vegetable market. Convenience – Besides the enjoyable activities, there are also many conveniences located downtown. This includes large, international stores, like Walmart and Office Depot, as well as a variety of small services like doctors’ clinics, dentists, copy shops, parcel delivery etc. – again, all within walking distance. Downtown is also very centrally located and is a very short drive to the city’s two malls, movie theaters, larger hospitals and much more. For those who prefer the car-free lifestyle that downtown offers, taxis to any of these other locations are affordable – usually $3 or $4 dollars.

Relaxation – The atmosphere mentioned above has a lot to do with the relaxation. It’s also very important that the beach itself is likewise a walk away. Residents can get up in the morning, take a relaxing walk down past Fifth Avenue (downtown’s main street – a pedestrian walkway) and enjoy a coffee and breakfast before strolling down to the beach, and relaxing in the sun with a cold drink at their side. Couples enjoy walking in the sand in the refreshing evening breeze. Groups of expats that feel like old friends share drinks on beachfront bars, enjoying the view, the weather, the conversation, and forgetting about the hectic, busy life they’ve left behind back in the U.S. or Canada.
