International Travel Health Insurance Should Not Be An Option
If you are preparing to travel overseas, whether for business or on pleasure and for just a few days or many weeks, you should not leave home before you have arranged suitable international travel health insurance coverage.
Medical care can be extremely costly overseas and in many areas you will discover that you will not be able to get medical treatment, even in emergency circumstances, unless you are able to pay up front. If you think this is strange then take my word for it it is a fact.
On one recent holiday I took a colleague to the local hospital in a well known Far Eastern holiday city after a luckily minor traffic accident in which he sustained a nasty gash to his leg requiring stitches and, as well as the nurses and doctors in the emergency room, we were also met by one of the hospital cashiers who asked for details of my friend's health insurance or a credit card/cash payment before any treatment could be administered.
International travel health insurance is specifically designed to provide medical cover for people traveling overseas and is an extremely flexible form of health insurance ...
... cover. It frequently allows for daily rates (rates which are based on the number of days for which you will be traveling) and can usually be arranged without any requirement to answer health questions and regardless of age. Coverage is also normally available on a worldwide basis or can be arranged to provide cover for travel to specific countries.
One particularly important thing to consider when buying international travel health insurance however is just where in the world you are traveling to and what standard of medical care will be available to you on arrival. Against this background, you should make sure that any policy covers you for every possible eventuality including things like hospitalization, ambulance fees (including the possible need for an air ambulance) and, most importantly, cover for your return home should this prove necessary.
Do not forget also that, if you are traveling as a family, any plan should cover the whole family and provide for such things as reimbursement should it be necessary for one or both parents to stay in hospital with a sick child or to accompany a child home by air ambulance.
One of the last things that we ever think about occurring when we travel overseas, especially on vacation, is being involved in an accident or falling sick while we are away with anything more than an upset stomach. However, accidents happen every day and serious illness can strike without any warning. Indeed, the chances of such events are considerably heightened when we are out of our normal environment, so why take the risk.
When it comes to buying international travel health insurance the principles are exactly the same as those that apply to buying any other type of insurance. Take your time and shop around looking at plans from several companies before making any decision. Stick with well know major insurers, which have an international reputation, and read through the small print of any policy document before committing yourself.
Finally, bear in mind that dealing with medical problems when you are sick and thousands of miles away from home is something that needs to be quick and easy. So, do not be tempted to cut corners when arranging your plan! You might pay a little more than you might perhaps like to but, if you have to use your policy, you will be extremely glad that you spent those few extra dollars.
