Send Your Teenager Abroad During Summer: The Programs and Benefits

During the summer months, there are literally hundreds of local activities offered for young, primary school children. ...
... From day camps to summer camps to sports teams, young children are never at a loss for exciting activities during the summer months. Conversely, few programs of this type exist for teenagers. This teen age group, which can admittedly be more difficult to entertain, are typically left to fend for themselves in the summer, and unless they find a job or go to summer school they will have plenty of unsupervised free time, which, as you know, can often lead to trouble.

Fortunately, there are a variety of international educational and summer camp-style programs available for teenagers—programs offered abroad that can help your teenager avoid this fate.

A couple of these programs are described below:

• Summer Camps Abroad. While the thought of attending summer camp locally is not generally appealing to teenagers, a summer camp held in places such as Italy, Spain and China may be another story altogether. Teenagers will room in dormitories with other teens from around the globe, sharing stories and participating in exciting activities with a multi-cultural flair. And there’s no need to worry about their safety. All teens are constantly supervised by camp staff—responsible and qualified adults who will lead group discussions and host each of the daily activities.
• Language Immersion Camps. How about a summer camp program with daily language classes—programs that offer fun activities along with total immersion language learning instruction? Language immersion camps, hosted by qualified instructors, are a great way to provide your teen with a trip of a lifetime, all while bolstering his/her understanding and spoken fluency of a new language.

The benefits of these types of summer abroad programs cannot truly be measured. Not only do they offer opportunities for academic achievement and language enrichment, they also help to promote cultural understanding, tolerance and new ways of looking at the world, not to mention a lifetime of fun activities squeezed into a few short weeks.
