Many Air soft enthusiasts love using semi and fully automatic guns. For this group the electric Airsoft gun variety is the most sought after variety because the efficiency of the gas variety is largely dependent on temperature and this makes them undesirable for use on cool days. The principal of operation of the electric type further suits the several different combat scenarios featured in this game. Airsoft electric guns, also abbreviated as AEGs, use rechargeable batteries mainly the NiMh and NiCad to supply the power required to drive a motor which in turns a gearbox that compresses a spring-loaded piston. BBs, being made of plastic, are light and thus their flight trajectory and accuracy for longer distances is largely affected by wind resistance. The solution therefore is using heavier BBs. Under the 6mm caliber BBs we have weights ranging from 0.12 to 0.3 gm. There is however a catch to this though; you need greater energy to propel the heavier ammunition out of the barrel. Using heavier ammunition also means that you will have less muzzle velocity and consequently lesser range. The solution is to find a middle ground by testing your AEG with different BBs to see which gives the best of range and accuracy.


Borrowing some technology from real firearms we discover that almost every Airsoft gun has a smooth barrel unlike the grooved/rifled features in the real firearms. The grooved feature gives the ammunition a spin and this reduces the air pressure on the top surface as it becomes airborne. With the consequent unequal pressures the effect of gravity is reduced and a more stable trajectory is achieved and thus the ammunition can have a longer range. In an Airsoft gun this can be achieved by means of a Hop Up. This device is basically a chamber with a rubber wheel and which rubs the top surface of the BB thus creating a back spin on it and effectively giving it more lift.
