Using a machine, along with CPAP supplies, to properly treat sleep apnea does not require a lot of work or maintenance on the part of the patient. However, since many of these parts are made of degradable material, some will need a bit of attention or replacement over time. The following guidelines are meant to provide guidance about when each part’s replacement schedule.

CPAP full mask – Most CPAP masks are quite durable. Proper cleaning and storage when not in use should allow a user to keep their mask up to a year before replacement is needed. Check the mask periodically to check for cracks.

Headgear – The rule of thumb for headgear is 6 months. This particular item is subject to stretching since it is placed over the head and removed every day. In addition, the hook and loop apparatus may begin to show wear after six months. The headgear is washable which may help it last slightly longer.

Cushion for full face CPAP mask – Cushions degrade over time due to overtightening or ignoring the care instructions. In general, when a ...
... cushion begins to leak or feels uncomfortable, it is time to replace. Most cushions last between three and six months if handled properly. If the cushion wears out in less than 30 days then you need to examine how you are using the mask or change masks.

Nasal Cushion – Basically the same as the face cushion described above.

Chinstrap – Some CPAP supplies seem very similar and almost interchangeable. Such is the case with the chinstrap. Their elasticity and constant use are what cause them to breakdown. Like the headgear, look to replace the chinstrap at around six months or whenever it becomes too stretched. Look for adjustable chinstraps to help alleviate overstretching.

Tubing – Tubing must be replaced at least once a year as mold and mildew could create series health issues. In the interim, wash the tubing every day with mild soap or a vinegar and water solution to keep it free from bacteria. Compared to most CPAP supplies, tubing is relatively cheap and easy to replace.

Filter - Generally, filters should last a few months. But how frequently a filter is changed depends on the amount of dust and dander in the room. The disposable filter should be changed monthly or whenever it looks dirty. If your CPAP machine has a foam pollen filter, it can be washed and used for a few months. But eventually, that filter begins to degrade and should be replaced. It is important to keep a supply of filters available to switch them out when necessary. When filters don’t get changed, the machine and CPAP therapy are not running optimally.
