Dealing With Fall Allergy Symptoms
Fall allergy symptoms are often among the worst of all seasonal allergies. They are the final blow that hay fever inflicts on allergy sufferers just before the cold weather brings relief from airborne allergens. If you suffer from spring allergies caused by tree pollens, or summer allergies caused by grass pollens, then the fall allergy season will very likely be much harder on you than the others.
This is because fall allergies are almost entirely caused by ragweed pollen. And ragweed pollen is among the most potent of all pollens when it comes to causing allergy symptoms.
However, if you are looking for relief from your fall allergies, it is first a good idea to understand the fall allergy symptoms.
Common Symptoms:
Itchy Eyes
Runny Nose
Sneezing
Headache
Stuffy Nose
Skin Itchiness
Severe Symptoms:
Fall allergies can pose many more significant problems than just itchy eyes and sneezing. if left unchecked for a prolonged period of time, they can lead to a number of other more serious symptoms including:
Rash
Abdominal Pain
Nausea ...
... or Vomiting
Difficulty Breathing
Wheezing
Confusion
Several of the above symptoms can be indicators of Anaphylaxis, which is a life-threatening allergic reaction. The primary symptom is difficulty breathing. If you experience any of the above symptoms you should see a doctor immediately!
Diagnosing Fall Allergies:
It is often easy to confuse allergies with other types of health problems including a cold or chemical sensitivity. Colds produce many of the same symptoms including runny nose, sneezing, and headaches. And chemical sensitivity can cause rashes, itchy eyes, or other types of irritation that people perceive as allergies.
An allergist can perform many different types of testing in order to determine what allergens are causing your problems. If you are not interested in identifying the specific pollens that cause your allergies, then there may not be a need for specific tests. Simply by looking at you symptoms, and basic resources like local pollen counts, you can begin to get an idea for whether you have fall allergies and what may be causing them.
Treatment:
Treatment for any type of seasonal or pollen related allergy is very similar. Avoidance is the number one recommended method. This includes staying indoors and using other avoidance techniques when headed outdoors. See our Hay Fever Treatment page for specific instructions on how to avoid allergens. In addition, we have a wide range of other treatment methods that are practical for Fall Allergy Symptoms.
