"When preparing to take lessons in Jui Jitsu, Tai Kwon Do, or any other type of martial arts, you may end up having to go and grab a few things from a karate supply store. There are lots of things you've probably heard of already and should be able to pick out fairly easily, but there are also things that you've probably never heard of that you will have to know how to identify.

The first thing you are going to need before you even arrive for the first lesson is the proper uniform, but you want to make sure you get the one your class will be using. The most common martial arts uniform is the jacket that folds one side over the other and is tied at the middle with a belt, kind of like a bath robe, but there are also others that are designed to be more comfortable while training.

Any quality karate class is going to eventually come to the point where you are allowed to practice with some of the many martial arts weapons like swords and staffs, and it is not unlikely that you will have to identify and purchase these for yourself. The Bo staff is a popular weapon that many train with, and it is basically a long, ...
... hard pole. Swords are common enough that most people should be able to identify one on sight, but the ones you train with will have a wooden, foam, or hard rubber blade in place of steel. Nun chucks are two solid shafts about one to two feet long that are tethered together by a chain or thick rope.

When you get to the point in your karate classes where you are required to fight one-on-one with the other students, you will want to have some good sparring equipment. You can't yourself open for too many kicks to the head or broken bones, so shin guards, mouth pieces, headgear, and many other things should be on your shopping list. You shouldn't have much of an issue finding those things since you can pretty much tell what will fit where on your body, but there are some that are too thin for proper protection and are only meant for use by advanced students and during tournaments.

Your initial visit to the karate supply shop will probably feel a tad overwhelming at first. There's no need to let yourself get overwhelmed, however, because you can always ask your teacher or other students for help when having to pick out just what you need. "
