There are lots of things you've probably heard of already and should be able to pick out fairly easily, but there are also things that you've probably never heard of that you will have to know how to identify.

The first thing you are going to need before you even arrive for the first lesson is the proper uniform, but you want to make sure you get the one your class will be using. The most common martial arts uniform is the jacket that folds one side over the other and is tied at the middle with a belt, kind of like a bath robe, but there are also others that are designed to be more comfortable while training.

Any quality karate class is going to eventually come to the point where you are allowed to practice with some of the many martial arts weapons like swords and staffs, and it is not unlikely that you will have to identify and purchase these for yourself. You shouldn't have much of an issue finding those things since you can pretty much tell what will fit where on your body, but there are some that are too thin for proper protection and are only meant for use by advanced students and during tournaments.

Your initial visit to the karate supply shop will probably feel a tad overwhelming at first. There's no need to let yourself get overwhelmed, however, because you can always ask your teacher or other students for help when having to pick out just what you need. "
