All travel gets more expensive during school holidays, including flights. If you don't have children, this one's a no-brainer. And if you do have children, have you considered leaving them behind?

Many times you'll find that the cheap airfares are only offered on the internet, because when booking your airline ticket online your not taking up staff time or costing them telephone expenses.

The cheapest flights tend to sell out within hours of being released. Airlines play with their fares at any time, but the biggest waves of fresh fare releases tend to be on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. flying to cheaper, less congested secondary airports and flying early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid air traffic delays and take advantage of lower landing fees

One-way tickets often cost more than the return equivalent. It is often cheaper to travel on a Sunday or mid-week, or if you stay over the weekend. Checking prices for dates a few days before or after you originally wanted to fly can often have a big impact on fares. And if you really want to be away for Christmas or a particular bank holiday weekend, then extending your stay for a few days either before or after the popular dates can save you money.

As with all service industries, convenience usually costs more. For example, a weekend getaway may be significantly cheaper if you are willing to fly on Saturday and return on Monday than if you needed to leave on Friday and return on Sunday.

The "less frills" approach means that instead of the increasing trend to fully flat seats for overnight comfort, they utilise business class seats which were popular a decade or so ago.

Moreover, if you book vacation packages for a group of persons you can further
reduce the cost. Usually vacation package booked earlier than two weeks fetch you a decent discount in airfares.

Shop around. Because different travel-related websites have different relationships with air carriers, it's always best to check more than one site before purchasing. Just because one site had the best fare for your last trip doesn't mean that same will be true for the next one.
