If you are lucky enough to live in a large space, where space is not an issue, your bathroom furniture can be as large and opulent as you like. But if, like many of us today, your living space is small, your bathroom is likely to be at least proportionally small, if not smaller—home builders often cut corners in the smallest room to make the rest of the rooms seem larger, and in an empty house, it is easy not to notice how cramped a bathroom space can be. Add to this the fact that you have to accommodate the space for a door to open and you can really be pushed for space.

However, there are many ways to economize in the way you use limited space in a small bathroom. One is to install a half-size bath, or even just a shower stall, which takes up a good deal less floor space than a full-size bath (and a shower, of course, is much more economical on water and heating than a bath, so you can save yourself some money and the planet some resources at the same time!). If you shop around, you can achieve similar floor space savings with your other bathroom furniture, too. Bathroom vanities, for example, come in anything from ...
... 24” wide upward, and can incorporate a surprising amount of storage space in the shelves and/or cupboards and drawers below the sink, especially if you choose one of those on which the hand basin sits on top of the unit itself, rather than being sunk into the top surface. This also makes the faucet sit higher up, of course, so be careful if some members of your family are not very tall; in this case you should look at the more standard varieties of bathroom vanities, with the basin set at a lower level.

Glass topped bathroom vanities are worth considering too; while they take up no more or less space than ceramic ones, they create a light, airy effect due to their transparency. Glass basins and counter tops are also very easy to keep clean and sparkling, which is an added bonus.

Depending on the shape of the bathroom, you may be able to combine one of the bathroom vanities available with a side cabinet; these come in all shapes and sizes and provide that valuable extra storage space for things like towels and other bathroom necessities. Choose one with a glass front if all of your family is neat and tidy and will fold and put things away properly; otherwise, choose a solid door version to hide the mess behind! And make the most of any free wall space by adding a mirror or two to create the illusion of space even when there isn’t any; position them carefully and you can make the sight lines bounce off each other so that you double the illusion you see on entering the bathroom!
