Dolphins are one of the smartest marine mammals in the world. From many angles, they are just like human beings and they are people’s best friends. Dolphins have similar bone structure and they also give a birth to live young. If you ask me what the biggest difference between us and them is, I think it is the respective environment. We live on the land, but they live in the ocean.

Due to the voluntary nature of breathing in dolphins, they cannot sleep the same way terrestrial mammals sleep. Because we live on land, so we breathe involuntarily while dolphins are conscious breathes. In other words, in order to breathe, they have to be conscious. But there is another question you might ask me: Does dolphin need a sleep like people? The answer is affirmative.

Dolphins and some other marine mammals spend their whole time in the sea. So how can they sleep and not drown? According to observations of bottlenose dolphins, people find there are two methods of their sleeping. They either rest quietly in the water, vertically or horizontally, or sleep while swimming slowly next to another animal.

Generally, dolphins ...
... sleep with only one brain hemisphere in slow-wave sleep at a time, thus maintaining enough consciousness to breathe and to watch for possible predators and other threats. Because they have to be conscious to breath, it means they cannot go into a full deep sleep. When marine mammals sleep and swim at once, they are in a state similar to napping.

While sleeping, the dolphins shut down only half of its brain, along with the opposite eye. At this time, this half brain is having a rest. The other half of the brain stays awake at a low level of alertness, which can ensure whether there are predators, obstacles or other animals around them, and also alert dolphins it is time to swim to the surface for a fresh of air.

Several minutes later, dolphins will reverse this process, wake up the rested half of brain and rest the other active side. The time of their sleep is not too long. To avoid drowning during sleep, it is crucial that marine mammals retain control of their blowhole.

A dolphin's behavior when sleeping includes three types. First one is swimming slowly and surface and next one is rest at the surface, the Last one is rest on the bottom.

Now you know that dolphins also need sleep just like human beings due to they must be conscious and alert to recognize that its blowhole is at the surface.
