{the History Behind The Modern Boy Christening Outfit|comprehending
"The boy christening outfit is a new but increasing tradition, which only started in the last century. Previously little baby girls and boys both went to their baptismal dress in sold white, formal dresses. Often times the gown was sent down the line through every generation, with no regard for gender whatsoever.
The color hasn't changed, as white is still heavily favored. The difference is that now, instead of babyish gowns, there are knit rompers and cotton choices. Lace and silk is still utilized to create some male ensembles, but they are still modeled after more adult masculine clothing. What makes them different from the gowns of the past is the fact that they are designed in the style of little pantsuits. This is just a new take on a super old tradition.
We know that until the middle of last century, baby clothes were basically genderless, which is why this was never a big deal in the past. The greatest influence on clothing for babies in times past was most likely diapering and toilet training, which are clearly made easier without pants.
There are still moms out there who dress their ...
... baby, regardless of gender, in the passed down baptismal dress that their grandmother wore on her big day. Honestly, the ceremony itself trumps the clothing when it comes to importance. It is a component of many denominations of Christianity and has roots in the biblical Old Testament.
Truly, the clothes are more of a secular tradition than a religious one, they are usually white and usually formal, but this really isn't that important to scripture. In a few denominations, babies are completely immersed in the baptismal font during the event. Often, in these churches, the baby may be stripped down to their diaper before receiving their blessing. The clothing simply serves as a formality, to remind others that this is a important occasion, but serves little or no purpose otherwise.
Though there is no way to know for certain how long these ceremonies have been going on, we know for certain that they were going on in the 3rd century. Some biblical scholars feel that this history goes even further back than that. Though the boy christening outfit is becoming commonplace these days, it's very unlikely that so much fanfare was given to the clothing worn by babies of yore on their baptismal day. although these suits and dresses are maintained as heirlooms, they are nowhere as valuable as the occasion itself.
