The tricky thing about allergies is that there can be triggers everywhere. First, there are environmental and ingested “antigens” that can cause an allergic reaction if you happen to have an overly sensitive immune system.
When you come into contact with the allergen — be it dust, pollen, a dog — your body will release “histamine,” which could result in sneezing; itchy, watery eyes; and hives, among other symptoms. Seasonal allergies, while they can make you feel miserable, are not life threatening. For a few unfortunate individuals, certain allergens can cause “anaphylaxis.” Other types of allergies include respiratory, food and drug.
Traditionally, Western medicine has controlled allergies with over-the-counter drugs that are meant to stop your histamines from overacting when you come into contact with an allergen. Unfortunately, many of these allergy medications can cause side effects. Try some of these other strategies at home to potentially lessen allergy symptoms and reduce your need ...
... for medication.

Ten Tips for Combating Allergy Attacks
1. Drink plenty of water. This will help your body get rid of allergens, which may be trapped, in addition to boosting your immune system.
2. Eat a balanced diet. By eating healthy, you will have more strength to fend off allergens.
3. Avoid any foods that you might be allergic to. While this is easy enough in your own home, when you are out visiting, you must be mindful of your food allergies and ask that none of the food that you are eating has come into contact with the foods that you are allergic to.
4. Remove all allergens from your home. This includes carpets, feathered pillows and duvets.
5. Consider taking herbal supplements to reduce the chances of an allergy attack.
6. Buy a vacuum with an air filter. This will ensure that all of the allergen particles stay inside the vacuum cleaner, and do not fly back into the air.
7. If you have seasonal allergies, try showering before you go to bed if you have come into contact with any allergens. In fact, the best thing to do is shower as soon as you come into the house, and wash your clothes immediately. This will reduce the chance that you are spreading the allergen throughout your own home.
8. Buy a dehumidifier. If your house is damp, this can be a breeding ground for mold, which, in turn, could aggravate your allergies. Showers and bathtubs that are constantly damp need to be washed frequently to remove the mold — the same goes for items such as shower curtains.
9. Clean your home often. By cleaning frequently, you are removing the amount of allergens that build up in your home. This includes the furniture, curtains and linens.
10.Probably most importantly, detox your body. A week-long detox plan is said to help boost your immunity and your energy levels. It could also help you flush your body of toxins, including any foods that you might be allergic to.

Food Allergies
When it comes to food allergies, it’s probably the milder ones that you need to be aware of. Food allergies could cause a whole host of symptoms, including stomach upset, depression or fatigue.
Some food allergies can actually trigger other allergies. For instance, if you are allergic to dairy, you may also find that you are susceptible to airborne particles that affect the respiratory system. Dairy increases the production of mucus in your body.
In another example, allergists have suggested that you avoid eating melon, banana, cucumber, sunflower seeds, chamomile and herbal supplements containing Echinacea if you are allergic to ragweed. Talk to your health-care provider or an allergist to get some help piecing together your own allergy-busting diet.
To start, here is a list of the foods that are least likely to cause an inflammatory reaction:
• brown or white rice
• most fruits, except citrus
• most vegetables, except corn and tomatoes
• turkey
• walnuts or pumpkin seeds
• white fish (halibut, sole, swordfish)
Finally, be aware that chemicals and toxins can have a big impact on your allergic response.

Avoiding Toxins
It’s a bit of a challenge to avoid toxins, especially outside. You will probably find that you have a lot more control over your indoor environment than what’s being released into the air outside.
Air filters could help as much with chemical allergies as they do with dust and mold allergies. Try using an air filter in your home, apartment or office if you suspect that chemicals may be wearing down your immune system. Some are inexpensive, while others are quite sophisticated, and can cost as much as $700.00.
There are stores that specialize in air filters and equipment. You might want to check out the different products that are available to see if an air filter might help with your allergies.
If you’ve tried to avoid exposure to chemicals but are still having allergic reactions, you may need some added help in the form of herbal supplements. Milk thistle has been shown to have antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects in the treatment of liver disease. Dandelion, beets, parsley and chamomile could also support and detoxify your liver. Ginger is great for cleaning the kidneys, and mullein and comfrey are good for the lungs.
